WHAT NOW PHILIPPINES?

The recent visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping throws a lot of unanswered questions concerning the future of the country amidst sovereignty issues, debt trap concerns and feared collapse of US-RP ties.  With the strengthened  ties between the Philippines and China, one wonders what will happen to the US-RP relation? Will it affect American business interest in the country including outsourcing companies in the country?  As we all know, most BPO companies operating in the country are  American owned and currently employs nearly one million Filipinos.

Another brewing concern is the controversy going around involving Chinese illegal workers in the country; what is exactly President Duterte's stand on this?  There are reportedly over 150,000 Chinese illegal workers in the country, working mainly in the gaming industry and construction business sites and the number is growing. Authorities have also spotted many Chinese nationals working in BPO companies in the outskirts of Metro Manila.  With high unemployment rate of 8.41%, do we need foreign workers?  Another concern is the continued shipment of illegal drugs  coming from China involving billions of Pesos.  As we all know the government's bloody war on illegal drugs has claimed thousands of lives.

I have nothing against Chinese people. in fact, I do have many Chinoy friends and I always admire them for being achievers specifically in the field of business, but the issue is not about the Chinese people per se. The main issue is about the inconsistencies of the Philippine government's policies in dealing with China's aggressive maritime territorial claims, and yet the country keep on seeking business loans from China to support the government's "build, build program." Why not tap local giant companies to finance the government's projects? We do not want to be controlled by China or any country for that matter but what worries the Filipino people is the impact that the country would face in the future.
Another bragging issue is the Government recent proposed rice tariff scheme that is envisioned to generate 10 Billion Pesos of taxes which the government can tap to support local farmers.  The scheme will allow free trade or importation of rice from neighboring countries.  The irony of it is that the proposed tarrif scheme will also impose tariff on the local farmers. Isn't it crazy?  What will happen to our local farmers? It's like instead of helping the local farmers, the scheme will  kill the local industry in the long run.

There's nothing wrong if the country strengthen its ties with China or any country for that matter, but what concerns the people is the moral side and vested interest that is feared detrimental to our sovereignty.  We want to be objective as much as we could and that being said, we still give China the benefit of the doubt. It may be too early to judge since the real impact has yet to be felt notwithstanding the ethics and principle issues at the back our minds.
